Garden: Judy and Jerry's Arkansas Shade Garden
This is a shade garden in the heart of Hot Springs Village. We moved here a few years ago and have gradually planted the surrounding land. My favorite are the hydrangeas my daughter sent me. I would love to change my hydrangeas to a bluer shade - if anyone has advice on how to do this, that would be great.

Garden: Barbro Osher Sculpture Garden at the De Young
The outdoor environment of the museum is as important to the project as the interior of the buildings. The gardens feature the Barbro Osher Sculpture Garden and terrace (35,000ft²), situated beneath a cantilevered roof, and the George and Judy Marcus Children's garden of enchantment (47,500ft²).
The landscaping provides an organic link between the building and the surrounding environment on all four sides and incorporates features from the old museum.
Redwood, cypress, eucalyptus, ferns and other native and non-native plants have been planted both inside and outside the museum to emphasize the sense of blending the park and museum together. There are 5.12 acres of new landscape with 344 new trees planted; 48 trees were planted inside building. The Pool of Enchantment had 69 of its historic boulders returned and seven new turtle sunning rocks were provided. (Source: Design Build Network)
Garden: The Abkhazi Garden
Abkhazi Garden is a dynamic work of art within a discipline imposed by the site. A unity of execution is evident in the layout of buildings, paths and plant material. Forms and materials were selected to express one overruling idea, the rhythm of the natural landscape. The house, summerhouse and garden shed, modest in size and construction, complement this landscape. The intimate paths show a human scale appropriate for the private world the Abkhazis wanted to create for themselves.
Some rhododendrons are over 100 years old, their gnarled trunks as attractive as their flowers. Trained mature conifers cascade down the rock faces, and carefully pruned azaleas provide living sculptures. Each season, naturalized bulbs carpet the garden in sheets of colour. Choice alpine plants are sited carefully in natural rock crevices. (Source: The Land Conservancy)
Garden: Larry Ellison's Japanese Garden
This 10-hectare site is perhaps the most ambitious Japanese garden ever constructed in North America.
The estate includes a large waterfall, a cascade, a pond and seven buildings. A round stone bridge and pathways lead to a courtyard where guests can see the main residence (north and south wings) over the three-acre pond. The teahouse, which was re-assembled in Woodside after being brought from Japan, stands in a deep forest.
The garden is being constructed by Shigeru Namba, a Japanese garden builder. He has already moved 3,500 tons of rock. About 81,000 cubic yards of earth were moved from the pond and redistributed to make way for hills and islands. Over 500 trees were added to the 700 existing natural trees.
The estate's design is based on that of Katsura Rikyu. (Source: jgarden.org)
Garden: Glide Memorial Rooftop Garden
The garden is constructed from easily transportable and reused materials. The eight 2-by-4-foot raised beds are made of plastic milk crates connected, filled with soil and covered with thin sheets of wood taken from shipping pallets.
In addition to the milk-crate beds, spinach and radishes grow in far lighter 6-inch-deep mini beds made from plastic bread crates. The garden also hosts eight pots of hydroponic tomatoes, grown using a soilless, recirculating water system. Reclaimed wood was used to build a petite greenhouse on the garden's periphery. There is a homemade bin full of worm castings, and a compost barrel sits on a set of runners so it can be spun to expedite the breakdown process. (Source: The San Francisco Chronicle)

Garden: The Ruth Bancroft Garden
The Ruth Bancroft Garden is an exceptional example of garden design and a collection of water-conserving plants.
he Ruth Bancroft Garden 2.5 acres (10,000 m²) is a dry botanical garden containing more than 2,000 cactus, succulents, trees, and shrubs native to Africa, Australia, California, Chile, and Mexico. In 1989, it became the first garden in the United States to be preserved by the Garden Conservancy, and has been open to the public since 1992.
The Garden began in the early 1950s as the private collection within Bancroft Farm, a 400-acre (1.6 km2) property bought by publisher Hubert Howe Bancroft as an orchard for pears and walnuts. In the 1950s, Ruth Bancroft brought home a single succulent, an aeonium grown by Ms. Glenn Davidson. By 1972, the collection had outgrown its location and was moved to its current site, then an orchard of dying walnut trees. Today the Garden is an outstanding landscape of xerophytes (dry-growing plants).
Garden collections include: aeonium, aloes, agavaceae, Brachychiton rupestris, Brahea armata, bromeliaceae, Butia, dudleya, dyckia, echeverias, Echinocactus, hechtia, Jubaea chilensis, Puya berteroniana and P. chilensis, Xanthorrhoea preissii, and yuccas. (Source: Wikipedia)

Garden: Sandy's Piece of Heaven
This garden has been in the making since 1989 and has had to adapt to increasing shade. It is mostly a perennial garden that keeps changing all spring, summer and fall. After daffodils and tulips are done, each season is dominated by one or several showy perennials: peonies and penstimon in June, lilies and shasta daisies in July, dahlias and phlox in August, asters and chrysanthemums in September. Every season also has minor players like coral bells, astilbe, delphinim, foxglove, lady's mantle and many others. I look for a range of colors and textures My preference is for flowers that are suitable for cutting .
Garden: Frank Levinson's Zero Water Bill Garden
The Levinsons decided to buy the house, built during the '50s, from a real estate agent who had lived in it for 20 years, in 2006. Despite its flaws, the Levinsons decided to live in the house as it was for a year. That gave them enough time to get a feel for the place, to decide what changes they wanted to make and how to best make them.
Copper gutters, which stand up well in a marine environment, were installed at a slight angle to collect and funnel rainwater to the huge cisterns anchored at the base of the house. The rainwater harvesting system is connected to a drip-irrigation system to water the newly landscaped grounds. (Source: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/07/12/REEK18L7KO.DTL )

Garden: Healthy Kidz Minnie St. Garden
The garden was started in the spring of 2008 as a project of two churches (Rosedale United Church of Christ and St. Paul AME Zion) in the Rosedale area of Kansas City Kansas. An empty lot, made available by a 'Good Neighbor' allowed the garden to come to life. Their mission was to make available healthy food options for the folks living in the immediate area. In the fall of '08 volunteers from another church joined them. (Rainbow Mennonite)
In the summer of 2009 we started a small "Farmer's Market" on the church parking lot. We also harvest and sell to individuals at different times. Some of the veggies are given away.
The UCC Church was host to the Healthy Kids Initiative Day Camp in August. The kids walked to the garden and were able to see first hand how their vegetables grow. They then were able to "pick" and fill their baskets.

From the terrace off the Cat Bus Room, a spiral stairway leads to the roof, and there you will find a grassy rooftop garden. From this lofty post, a serene five-meter-tall Robot Soldier (from “Laputa Castle in the Sky”) looks down on Inokashira Park.

I am still in the process of breaking in the soil, putting in my favourite plants in a tiny piece of the garden and populating a big long balcony with things that can survive the full sun of the Italian summer. This spring I should see my first tulips, lillies, narcissus, paeonies, irises and alliums blooming. I should also see the Daphne, Osmanthus, Magnolia Stellata, Clematis Armaandi, the various types of clematis patens and rhododendrons put in at least a little bit of a show on the balcony...Of course there is always the chance that some of these will not like the Full sun treatment on the balcony but I will find out this year.
I need to describe the Vegetable and fruit area as well but I will leave that to later.
