Garden: Paula's Butterfly and Bee GardenCompleted redesigned and replanted 7 years ago, this series of garden area covers two-thirds of an acre, with a view of Sausalito across the water. New stone walls were recently added to terrace the SW facing hill. The growing season begins with irises and then moves on to roses (100+) and then to dahlias. Other highlights of this pie-shaped property include a woodlands garden, 18 fruit trees, a redwood greenhouse, a succulent garden, an antique water pump collection and garden sculpture.
The garden features flowers at the warm end of the spectrum: apricot, orange, hot pink, red and burgundy with smaller doses of blue-purple and chartreuse.
Although the Zone 9b garden rarely sees frost conditions, Paula and Dennis Jaffe contend with less than ideal soil and climate challenges. Morning fog, clay soil, extreme wind and Southwest facing tiers with unrelenting sunshine are a few of the problems. The water shortage is also an ever present consideration.
Drip irrigation waters 100% of the plants with the lawn sprinkled by MP rotaters. Several compost areas and a worm farm provide the planting beds with a constant supply of natural fertilizer.

For those that want more: Growing up in the "winter, water, wonderland" that is Michigan has made me appreciate the natural world around us. I maintain a hummingbird/butterfly garden at the local library through my volunteer hours as a master gardener and a tiny, urban flower garden at home - it is mostly shade but I have a few spots that get more sun.
Garden: patricias backyard butterfly hummingbird paraI have a variety of gardens front and back. Some shady some sunny. I have a butterfly and hummingbird garden and a hosta garden and vegetable garden and perennial garden. The perennial garden has a small pond with a squirrel fountain that I call Merlot.
Out front I have some morning glories and some cup and saucer vines growing along with a rose bush and other perennials. I love my time in my gardens.
Garden: Lady Gray's Home Garden1 acre lot with lots of trees linning property and a grove of linden trees in the front yard; gardens around the house, shed and linning the back of property, with much more to come. Full sun in back yard and dappled sun in front.
Garden: Collecters DreamOur gardens range from a rock garden border with English style plants in the front yard. To a full shade bed in the side yard. In the back we have our water garden with fish pond and along the back drive we started a perrienial butterfly garden. I love to plant perrienials and watch them grow each year. I love variety and have everything from old fashioned larkspur to modern asiatic lilies. I also love wildflowers and have tried my hand at a few. Last year we added snakeroot and it was beautiful blooming in June fast spreader also. I love creating places of interest and beauty. Always a work in progress our gardens are a fun way to teach our two kids.
Garden: My little corner of peace. My garden is a mixture. The vegetables are grown in raised beds throughout the backyard with full to partial sun. I also have edged the garden with fruit trees, grapes and arctic kiwi, and I have a shade perennial garden that is fairly natural woodland. I mix wild strawberries in amongst the perennials and try to make my garden bird friendly. It is a totally organic garden complete with waterfall, stream and pond. We plan to add the mediterranean feel with stone pizza/bread oven and deck surrounded by herbs. My latest addition is the start of a butterfly/hummingbird garden.

Garden: The Winding PathSurrounding the patio, I have various perennials (did pansies for years)

The corner of the garden shelters a Butterfly Tree with gladioli spaced along the back fence. I always leave room for a \\\\\\\"kitchen garden\\\\\\\" along the fence (I like trying new things. In 2002/3 my garden was a \\\\\\\"healing place\\\\\\\" from breast cancer (stage 3). God sent tiny birds one day when I was especially down and they had such joy in bathing in the water dripping from the hibiscus that I forgot myself.

Tiene forma de mariposa y en cada una de sus alas se desarrolla un programa de terapia hortícola para niños. El objetivo es una mejor calidad de vida y formar valores sociales en ellos. Garden: Collingwood Community GardenIn Spring of 2005 the institute connected with an amazing team of individuals to spearhead a community garden beneath the guideway at Joyce Skytrain Station. A second community garden was then established in summer 2006. These gardens have become important places for food growing, cultural sharing, leadership development, neighbourhood beautification and land stewardship.
The community garden is a place of beauty and diversity. The members care for several common plots which grow ornamental and edible herbs; a public food boarded on the outside of the garden fence where those passing by can pick and enjoy the harvest and a new butterfly boarder. Inside the fence there are twenty-two plots which have been utilizes by families and individuals of their own enjoyment and harvest. The garden members have been apart of many other projects including developing the Native Berry Trail, Seedy Saturdays and the Collingwood Days Plants Sales.
Garden: Blue Heron Park Community GardenThis sweet garden, located in a new park, features 20 plots, each 20 X 20, with two handicapped accessible plots which are raised to 24 inches. It also has a children's garden with a pizza garden, butterfly garden, bean teepee, and some tiny square foot garden boxes for the kids. The garden is only 5 years old, and was designed and built by teens living in a shelter home. They surveyed the surrounding neighborhoods for interest, applied for a local grant, built a garden shed, and built a deer proof fence using poles harvested from a forestry project. It has a gazebo built from the same harvested lumber. Gardeners gather monthly for parties and workdays. This year we have been blessed with many babies and their young parents, all learning to garden organically.
Garden: Winnemucca Community GardenThe Winnemucca Community Garden (WCG) is a nonprofit organization established in 2003. Our mission is to strengthen community relationships, foster environmental stewardship, and demonstrate horticultural principles. Winnemucca is located in the high desert of northern Nevada. In 2007 the garden became a partner agency of the United Way of the Great Basin. The garden is situated on a 2.5-acre allotment of land donated by the City of Winnemucca, which donates all of the water, too. One half of the garden contains individual plots for community members to adopt and garden in, while the other half includes a water feature, butterfly garden, and native plant landscaping. A greenhouse and composting center are available for community use. The garden is located within the city limits in a residential area. One elementary school is located directly across the street. Educators use the garden as an outdoor classroom to expand upon Science, Math, and nutrition curriculum. Students of all ages learn through hands-on gardening, school programs, special events, and specialized workshops. The garden hosts a Farmers Market in collaboration with the local Food Bank and also sponsors the Plant a Row for the Hungry campaign to help make fresh produce available to those in need in our community.

Jill-OI've been a master gardener for 10 years. I work with youngsters and try to pass on the joys of growing things. I also grow and maintain a butterfly/hummingbird garden at a local library. My own garden is a small urban plot in an old neighborhood. It is surrounded by large old trees so my gardens are mostly shade and partial shade, though I do have spots that get 2-3 hours of sun.

Garden Photo:Monarda or bee balm is easy to grow, cheerful, attracts bees, butterfly, mantis, and stick bugs. I love that it easy to start new clumps. I also like using a leaf or two in my tea - it makes the flavor of store-bought Earl Grey tea. Not everyone likes the scent of the leaves but I do
