Fairview Church Garden was on the Kansas City Urban Farms and Gardens tour for 2009, July 28! We are a community vegetable garden(using organic practices), Youth Garden 50 x 50, supported by the Missouri Extension office and Missouri Master gardeners, some raised bed areas with flowers and vegetables, 4 plots for local gardeners, roughly 20 x 20 with main garden about 340 x 40, growing tomatoes, mostly hierlooms, (cherokee purple, amana orange, carolina gold). We also have Peppers(bells, jalapenos, anahiems, cherrys), Eggplant, Kale, Swiss Chard, Corn, Potatoes(purples, pontiac, klondike), Greenbeans, Squash, Cucumblers, Okra(burgandy), Kohlrabi, Broccoli, Cabbage, Sweet Potatoes, Beets, Onions, and Garlic. Whewwww.... we have a few herbs...Dill, Chives, Parsley, Basil(green, christmas, red) Horseradish, Mint(chocolate and apple), lastly Borage. Flowers such as marigolds, zinnias, petunias, and nasturtium.

The yard is in an older area and had been let go for a few years. My garden consists of 3 square boxes and 3 long planters plus several pots of vegetables, herbs and flowers. Vegetables are peas, carrots, cucumber, peppers, eggplant, broccoli, lettuce, radish, onions and tomatoes. I planted rhubarb in the yard as well. I also have 2 small flowerbeds. I also have most of a garden plot in one of the community gardens. I haven't been in it for about a week so I'm not sure what's going on with it. Potatoes, corn, tomatoes, cabbage, cauliflower, peas, beans, carrots, onions, beets, turnips, cucumbers, squash and pumpkin. If I get much of a crop I'm going to have to buy another freezer! I'm quite excited to see how things do. I planted several things that I never have before.

Suburban garden. I love flowers - grow as many type of lilies as I can lay my hands on. Have small veggie area about 16' x 8'and this year grew broccoli, cauliflowers, french beans, cucumbers, celery potatoes,peppers and chilli peppers. We grow apples - (wonderful crop - we are eating them at the moment) and soft fruits raspberries, red and black currants.I have a grass garden and a lavender bed. Wouldn't be the most well organised garden in the world but I Love it. I will try anything.

My garden is a little bit of everything. Although there is a lot of space to work with, I've tried to bring some of home (Minnesota) to my garden for my children. It has western grass in the middle, edged by small planting spaces that I've created with brick borders. There are two lilac trees, to remind me of the smells of spring when I was a boy. I grow seasonal berries, like strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries in some of the individual plots, and vegetables such as onions, tomatoes, broccoli, garlic, cucumbers, cabbage, etc. In others I grow flowers, such as roses, tulips, daffodils, and so on. And I also raise herbs, lavender, marjoram, thyme, basil, rosemary and mint. All together, I average about 150 different plants, either potted or planted in the soil.

New to gardening and just completed building 7 raised beds from scratch on our 1/4 acre flat section! 4 planned for veges, and herbs and soft fruit in the other 3. The majority of my gardening know-how has come from books/internet and as a child, watching my mother slaving in her garden every weekend (I thought it has to be more enjoyable than that looked!). Just planted out peas and corn seedlings with broccoli, cauli and lettuce germinating. Planted out parsley, oregano, thyme (vulgaris and lemon), chives and rosemary with others germinating. Young blackberry plant is the first in the soft fruit bed with others to come. Also have an existing hand dug plot with tomatoes and celery growing and the last of my broccoli and lettuce going to seed. Potatoes and onions growing in tyres at the moment but will grow potatoes in bags from now on and onions in the new beds. We also have an enormous walnut tree, plum, pear, peach, 3 apples and 2 lemons.

24 feet square, mostly veggies with salvia, marigolds and Mexican poinsettias scattered about. 6 different tomatoes, 5 lettuces, 2 spinach species, eggplant, kale, collards, broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, italian beans, peas, pablano, anaheim and green peppers, asparagus, cucumbers, cantelopes, fruit pumpkins. And in pots and separate small plots all around are herbs, roses, rose of sharon, peach and pear trees. Ya gotta love it!

My garden includes Brown, Green and Red Onions, Organic Golden Sweet Corn, Organic Tom Thumb Popping Corn, Spinach, Grand Rapids Lettuce, Organic Romaine Lettuce, Iceberg Lettuce, Cabbage, Organic Georgia Collard Greens, Organic Beefsteak Tomatoes, Organic Red Brandywine Tomatoes, Organic Long Red Cayenne Peppers, Organic Toma Verde Tomatillos, Sugar Baby & Charleston Grey Watermelon, Sunflowers, Eggplant, Radishes, Carrots, Cantaloupe, Zuccini, Jalepenos, Red Raspberries, Russet Potatoes, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Organic Asparagus, Organic Celery, Arugula, Chives, Dill, Red Bell Peppers, Soy Beans, Cherry Tomatoes, Okra and Cucumbers. Still to come, Green Beans, Green Bell Peppers, Cilantro, Wheatgrass, Echinacea, Ginger, Garlic, Purple Potatoes, Sweet Potatoes, Turnips/Turnip Greens, Mustard Greens, Cress, Butternut Squash, Beets and more.

My garden is primarily one with vegetables: tomatoes (all varieties, about 20 plants), eggplant, sweet green, yellow and red peppers, summer squash, zuchinni, bush cucumbers, brussel sprouts, beets, lettuce, broccoli, sage, chocolate mint, spearmint, rosemary, oregeno, basil, parsley, and chives. I also love bulbs, flowers of all types, and have some raspberries and strawberries.

This year I am growing herbs (thyme, basil, parsley, coriander, curry, lemon grass, oreganos and mint) for my cooking fancy, tomatoes (plum, beefsteak, Marmande and cherry tomato varieties),cucumbers, courgettes, broccoli, eggplants, lettuce, runner beans, honeydew melon and raspberries. I also have a lemon & lime trees, 2 avocados that haven't given any fruit yet, a guayaba and an apricot tree. I am also experimenting with seeds from a japanese square watermelon variety that a friend of mine gave to me.

We are trying to grow veg in what is normally a very wet climate! ( started 2009) - Most of the pumpkin/squash rotted! We hope to plant wildflowers around the basic lawns and we'll put in a couple of raised beds to save our poor old backs! Tony and I like to experiment growing different produce and varieties and challenging the weather!

The Community Garden is located at Edith Morley Park, 615 Campbell Technology Parkway. The approximate ½ acre garden site has 39 - 10x20 garden plots. Community garden plots are available for Campbell residents who want to have a garden to plant vegetables, herbs or flowers, but don't have a suitable site where they live. Plots are issued on a year-to-year and first-come-first served basis, with a limit of one plot per family. There is a $30.00 annual fee. This covers watering costs and upkeep of the garden. Currently, there is a waiting list. This community garden was started in the spring of 2008 as a project of two churches (Rosedale United Church of Christ and St. Paul AME Zion) in the Rosedale area of Kansas City Kansas. An empty lot, made available by a 'Good Neighbor' allowed the garden to come to life. Their mission was to make available healthy food options for the folks living in the immediate area. In the fall of '08 volunteers from another church joined them. (Rainbow Mennonite) In the summer of 2009 a small "Farmer's Market" was started on the church parking lot. Produce is also harvested and sold to individuals at different times. Some of the veggies are given away. The UCC Church was host to the Healthy Kids Initiative Day Camp in August. The kids walked to the garden and were able to see first hand how their vegetables grow. They then were able to "pick" and fill their baskets. DOUBLE CLICK THE IMAGES....

I have a small backyard patch, this is my 3rd year attempting to grow it. It's small and I'm not a pro but i'm obsessed with it . My dream is to own a yard big enough that I can grow a full pumpkin patch. (a difficult task at best in Edmonton AB)

I have a few vegetables here and there, some berries, and 47 fruit trees!

My big bed garden, lots of sand and ants, they don't like to share this soil. and 3 tree stumps that I need to work around! For my first year I've got onions, potatoes, cucumber, broccoli, beans, peas, and spinach. No idea how the broccoli will grow but it's loving it so far!

Broccoli in the basement! almost ready to transplant, we are just starting to harden these plants off! We don't have a geen house or hoop house, so the basement will just have to do.... we have space for about 40 trays, the broccoli along with other cold weather plants was the just the beginning!

Stacey in the garden, this was at the end of april, you can see the Broccoli clear to the north, (behind stacey) then cabbage, Kohlrabi, Kale, Chard with red lettuce between(the companion planting was just starting) and we are putting in the pepper plants, all 250 of em!

Now we are looking to the south, with the row covers now down off the broccoli, note the wires which held the cover up. These were political sign wires in nov. taking on a new role with helping to grow good food for lots of kids who just love broccoli!..lol.. you can see the tarps off to the west, which we used to keep the area dry, so we could plant, we had so much rain this spring! You can also see the coffee containers protecting the tomato plants behind me. Use and reuse is our mantra!

The broccoli I've ever tried. Unfortuneately, I didn't know when to cut it and it flowered. I am waiting to see if I can get seed from it for next year. There is one other, a much smaller one, but we will get some to eat. lol

Long blues.. a newfie favorite here!One of 3 varieties i grew this year, along with green onions, mixed lettuces, cabbage, and turnip. I just extended the garden, with plans of growing broccoli, cauliflour, peas,leek, and asparagus within 3 years.

Warts and all. I didn't know we had a swarm of locust visit! Losing my winter broccoli was one of the more devastating events in my life, however, I must learn to keep things in perspective! We have now put down a slug trap c/w lager (what a waste of a drink!)

We planted the nasturtiums too late to be an effective deterrent. I think the slugs would have eaten the broccoli anyway!

23rd May 2010..autumn/winter vegi garden.the silverbeet(picked daily) is doing well with the rain we have been having.and the parsley self seeded from the summer is now producing healthy plants..the raised gardenon the right of the picture has a Pipino plant which has edible fruit in may..this plant only came to me as about 6" tall 3mths ago and is flowering but has no fruit(next year)?there is new seasons cabbage/cauli/broccoli on the left of the Pipino and a few potato plants on the right..behind the Pipino is a self seeded tomato plant.be interesting to see if it produces anything at this

Broccoli 5/30/2010

Believe it or not, this is one of the decimated white broccoli plants from last year's pics. It sprouted again in the spring, but the birds/ants got to it again so instead of picking their only few small heads, I left it to go to seed for later collection and planting. The bees love it - spot the bee!
