I have had a variety of gardens in a variety of rental homes in Vancouver, and I hope to have my own land for veggie-growing one day.
Currently, I garden in a space on the property of my apartment building where the landlord kindly let me dig up the grass to put in a few plots and a compost, which are now enjoyed by a few of the tenants in the building. I am very interested in getting to know other gardeners in Vancouver who have come up with creative ways to garden without land/backyard space...

This Brooklyn backyard is filled with green conelike flowers dangling from Humulus lupulus, a vigorous vine winding skyward in the tiny backyard. A half-dozen vines had already wound themselves about 20 feet up the sturdy cords Mr. Granger had attached to the top of a metal ladder that was strung with a clothesline and pulley, for reeling laundry in and out of the second-story window. Garden: Coming Attractions
Our new garden is a large front and backyard with many rose bushes and grass. I am hoping to plant a small vegetable garden and a kid-friendly area so I can teach my kids how to garden. I plan to stay as organic as possible. The main problem is the weird and wacky weather - apparently we sit at the windy edge of a ferocious fog bank (see photo). It's sunny, except when we get engulfed by the fog. The fog bank is present through most of the year.

Our garden is created to enhance the character of the people living in our home. It is located South West of our property. The garden plants and its flower blooming attract mostly bird as their stop-over on their journey. Although, there are lots of insects and bugs that deteriorate the plant foliage, it is however manageable to display their colors. When I landscape our property backyard in 2001, it was my great desire to dedicate it to my family and relatives who would like to visit us at the same time offering for the blessed Virgin Mary. My wife was diagnosed with a breast cancer in 2003. It was a blessing that I have had the creation of the pond. When she was sick at that year, the garden landscape helped her to be healed and accompanied by the retreating sound of the water fall. Now she is healed and cancer free for almost 7 years. Thank you for having me in your web site. May God Bless All of Us and Keep us in our journey.

My garden is a mixture. The vegetables are grown in raised beds throughout the backyard with full to partial sun. I also have edged the garden with fruit trees, grapes and arctic kiwi, and I have a shade perennial garden that is fairly natural woodland. I mix wild strawberries in amongst the perennials and try to make my garden bird friendly. It is a totally organic garden complete with waterfall, stream and pond. We plan to add the mediterranean feel with stone pizza/bread oven and deck surrounded by herbs. My latest addition is the start of a butterfly/hummingbird garden.
Garden: Rough But Improving
South exposure but some decent shade behind the spruce.
Got a new place and had to start all over again. Some wonderful irises, thyme and a dianthus collection, many sale plants still in their pots, still yardstone to put out. Toddlers take up a lot of the former time and energy we had! At least there is some youthful enthusiasm for watering :)
An even rougher but larger backyard plot has blanketflower, raspberries, thornless thistle and deep-coloured delphiniums. Sea holly, usually a failure for the past many years, finally came back with a beautiful purple-blue sheen on the stems. Grass and willow invading; when will we have the time and energy? Trying to encourage a combo apple to grow.

Our garden is not what you would called a manicured wonder. I use no chemical fertilizers at all and do the very basic pruning and trimming just to keep thing from going completely wild. The reason we like it this way is because of the the wild birds that visit our backyard daily. Not to mention a few hedgehogs and hawks. Garden: Lots of Veggies in my garden!
I'm trying to grow as many veggies as I can in Calgary's wierd climate. Cold weather crops do better. Tomatoes must be under glass or forget it. It's discouraging at times. I use rain water to water mostly everything. I like simple old fashioned plants like morning glories, nasturtiums, sweet peas, roses etc. I always get blossom end rot on my zucchini and don't know how to prevent it..

In 2006 we bought a "yard with a house attached to it" and in 2007 our Yarden was installed and growing. We now have 1700 square feet of organic raised beds, espalier fruit trees and various other interesting edible things. This is season three and this magical space has become a hub for parties, classes and community activity. Gardening really builds friendships! People are amazed when we share with them how to plant things, the importance of seed diversity or the simple joy of cooking what you grow. Every year we have more and more volunteers who join us for our planting party Memorial Day weekend and hang around through the season to see "their" plants growing. It has been a great experience. We will be teaching classes in the winter/spring of 2010 so others in Chicago can learn from our mistakes (ha!) and have their own back or front yard oasis. Check out our blog at theyarden.com or via our fan page on Facebook or follow us on Twitter. We are on a Yarden journey - join us!

And in my exuberance to have a more enclosed garden space I over planted and have had to move and give away lots of plant material! Garden: About Your Garden
My entry in Bloom 2009 was made up of small garden designed with a thirty something year old single person in mind who has bought a home and not an investment property. The main aim of this garden is to show that a limited space and budget should not restrict what you can put in your garden.
I achieved this by using elements that you would expect to find in a large rather than a small outdoor space. The garden would be situated in a new housing development with residents located on all sides. The vertical planting scheme, along with the pergola, provides cover for the person within the garden. Both of these elements also help to enhance the view from outside the space.
This is a garden where they can sit after a day in the office and read a book or just relax.

My garden - my pride - my joy. Inland of southern Spain, 7,000 sq meters! and being washed away as I type. Have been working on my garden for 5 years and am so pleased with what I have achieved and also sadden by what I've lost, but it's all down to try and error. My garden is bursting with colour and is slowly spreading out into parts of the garden I haven't even started on. Never had a garden until I came to Spain.

Most of my garden is made up of pot plants, I live in Australia and there is a big push for gardeners living in Australia to grow Australian Natives, but I have to say I'm not a great fan, I love to grow Orchids, Rhodedendrons, ferns, gardeniars, I like plants that have lovely flowers, but I also like the weird and the wonderful plants, unfortunantly we are in the middle of a very long drought and that makes gardening here a bit difficult, especially for me as most of my plants are very water hungry, I also have a very productive vegetable garden that my friends are all happy about as I grow so many vegies that I could'nt possibly eat them all myself.

My garden is a little bit of everything. Although there is a lot of space to work with, I've tried to bring some of home (Minnesota) to my garden for my children. It has western grass in the middle, edged by small planting spaces that I've created with brick borders. There are two lilac trees, to remind me of the smells of spring when I was a boy. I grow seasonal berries, like strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries in some of the individual plots, and vegetables such as onions, tomatoes, broccoli, garlic, cucumbers, cabbage, etc. In others I grow flowers, such as roses, tulips, daffodils, and so on. And I also raise herbs, lavender, marjoram, thyme, basil, rosemary and mint. All together, I average about 150 different plants, either potted or planted in the soil.
