Garden: allotment
My allotment is on a slope, south facing, about 5oft long. i'm growing all kinds of vegetables and herbs, this is my first year there so i am an absolute beginner!
Garden: A garden of two halves
Three challenges are faced in this garden...the soil , the aspect and the slope. However , I have enjoyed trying to make something productive out of it and it keeps me busy!
The front garden is pretty steep but gets all the sun ( and wind ). The soil is not too bad but thin in places with rock underneath. Mainly ornamental except for the small bricked area near the house where I get all my seedlings started and grow some edibles.
The back garden is starting to look like an allotment according to my neighbours...their dining room window looks right onto it ( another challenge!). The soil there is pure clay so I have 4 deep beds and a hugelbeet with a few extra bits recently converted to usable soil by a kind of lasagne method. The house shades this garden almost completely in the winter but in summer half of it gets most of the sun available. A large area of flax stops the garden from falling down the gully and is home to 3 chickens at the moment.
Garden: Food stop
Two allotment size plots for vegetables, 20ft polytunnel, orchard of 25 or more apple and pear trees, a soft fruit garden with black and red currants, raspberries. Coppiced wooded area, with willow plantings of various diffrent types and sculptured willow hedges.
Garden: Melissa Garden- Isle of Lesvos -Greece
Jan Ponsford, hungry for greenery in the middle of a crowed London, developed an interior garden from household plants, successfully learning about propagation techniques. Her reputation as a gardener grew and many appreciative visitors come to her to learn about plants and their upkeep. Between 1991 and 1995 Jan lived in Amsterdam, designing and developing roof gardens and terraces for private clients alongside a career as one's of the premiere internationally renewed english composer/jazz singer. On returning to England Jan became involved with allotment growing in the countryside and costal area of Sussex with italian gardener Alessandra Pagani.
Alessandra is well versed in Mediterranean gardening, and ran a gardening business for many years.
In 2000 drawed to Greece by its natural beauty and abundance of fascinating wildlife, flora and fauna Jan and Alessandra moved to Eressos -Lesvos where they have developed an organic garden, much visited by enthusiasts, tourist and complementary therapist.

Garden: Dingle Bay Allotment
I have an allotment in the southwest of Ireland. It is a very beautiful place but quite exposed as it faces to the atlantic sea. There are 20 allotments in all.I started with 25'x15' and now increased it to 50'x30'.It took alot of extremely hard work to pepare the ground as it was previously a field of corn maise and very stoney, too much so! Now I can say I am happy with the back breaking work.I worked alot at night too, on and after reading up on certain vegetables to remind myself of their specific requirements as last year I was a novice and pretty much studied the Royal Horticultural Encylopedia of Gardening! So also with the knowledge from my parents I have to say I had one truly amazing allotment. I had drawn a design, several at that but kept to one which I have for record so I know what went where and dated it too. I grew potatoes, beetroot, carrots, kohl rabi, turnip, cabbage, curly kale, swiss chard, onions, garlic, peas and beans. What a great harvest!
Garden: Sandra's allotment!

Garden: My Little Plot
I returned to allotment gardening after a work enforced hiatus some 4 years or more ago. I now blog, tweet and facebook my exploits and advice to a growing number of friends and supporters. I also try and remember to blog about general gardening advice for our local newspaper website!
Before I gave up my old plot 20 years ago, I was an executive committee officer for the Allotments Society and then later worked as a head gardener for an 18th century estate.
Whilst working there I gained my RHS Certificate in Horticulture.
Garden: Douglas Island Garden Society Community Garde
DIGS (Douglas Island Garden Society) community garden is located on a little island in Nanaimo's (B.C., Canada) harbour. There 250-300 residents on the island and 87 of them are members of DIGS. Our garden has 10 communal beds which are maintained by volunteers and the produce from these beds are shared with island residents. There are also11 allotment beds leased annually by individuals. Our garden is located on city parkland and the city (Nanaimo) was very generous in assisting with initial costs to build the beds and fence. Because there are no stores on the island residents appreciate the produce from the garden which is put out on the harvest table as it is harvested along with a donation box. Our garden also acts as a community gathering location. Islanders can come with friends and family and sit in the garden and enjoy the surroundings.

Garden: Winnemucca Community Garden
The Winnemucca Community Garden (WCG) is a nonprofit organization established in 2003. Our mission is to strengthen community relationships, foster environmental stewardship, and demonstrate horticultural principles. Winnemucca is located in the high desert of northern Nevada. In 2007 the garden became a partner agency of the United Way of the Great Basin. The garden is situated on a 2.5-acre allotment of land donated by the City of Winnemucca, which donates all of the water, too. One half of the garden contains individual plots for community members to adopt and garden in, while the other half includes a water feature, butterfly garden, and native plant landscaping. A greenhouse and composting center are available for community use. The garden is located within the city limits in a residential area. One elementary school is located directly across the street. Educators use the garden as an outdoor classroom to expand upon Science, Math, and nutrition curriculum. Students of all ages learn through hands-on gardening, school programs, special events, and specialized workshops. The garden hosts a Farmers Market in collaboration with the local Food Bank and also sponsors the Plant a Row for the Hungry campaign to help make fresh produce available to those in need in our community.

Garden: Lisa's West Coast Canadian Garden
This garden is on a city lot located on the West Coast of southern British Columbia in Coquitlam ~ It is a small urban garden with perennials for sun and shade, native plants, vegetables and herbs, and a large deck garden with funky pots, a water garden in a half whiskey barrel, and potted shrubs and trees.
The garden is is located on a plateau several hundred feet above sea level, although the ocean is only a few miles away, so it receives torrential down pourings of rain in the winter, AND spring, AND fall. And it also freezes for at least some of the winter. Snow and prolonged cold spells have become common in the past few winters. In the summer, the climate is hot and mostly dry for one to two months per year, and the heat can come on very fast, with no transition time which is hard on the plants, and the gardeners. Other garden threats here include children's feet, soccer balls, and my husband's four wheel drive wheels.
Garden: 1st attempt in a community garden
This is my first attempt this year, with a veggie garden. So far so good, almost everything has grown, except celery and leeks, but I planted them too late. I should have started them indoors, too.
Hopefully, weather permits (so far July has been colder and rainier than usual), I'll get some good veggies out of it.
I'll repeat the experience in my private yard next year, as I have just bought my first home.

There are several gardens around my home. Some in full some, some in very little sun and some in a good mix. The majority of plants around my house are drought tolerant and in full sun. The areas which have little sun contains lots of different hostas from small to huge! I have been here for over a year and half and am finally starting to get a handle on what is a plant and what is a weed.

Garden: My Heavenly Retreat
I just love my garden. I have a three dimensional garden with specialized plants in pots because of moles. I have made lots of focal points and I think its a garden that draws you to it. I sometimes wish it was more sunny but then there are so many beautiful plants that love the shade. My Hybrid Hibiscus Sinensus are truly rewarding when they flower. I have seven different named varieties. I also love hanging baskets even though they take a lot of extra care and water. I grow a lot of my plants from slips with great success. My worm bins keep me busy and they are very rewarding with the worm tea that I pour over my plants from time to time and they produce very good compost. I have great fun and am truly thankful to have a garden. God is good.
